MIL Comes On With DTC P1441
Supersedes 00‑003 dated June 5, 2000
Affected Vehicles
| Year | Model | Trim | VIN Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1998–99 | SLX | ALL | ALL |
Revision Summary
The PGM Tester, Smart Cable, and software for SLX reprogramming are no longer available. Some generic scan tools may still work. If PCM updating is required, the PCM must be sent to the vendor for reprogramming.
Symptom
The MIL comes on and DTC P1441 (EVAP system flow during non‑purge) is stored.
Possible Causes
The PCM software does not compensate for fuel tank pressure sensor signal variation when fuel sloshes in a nearly full tank.
Corrective Action
Replace the 20‑to‑120‑ohm fuel sending unit with an 80‑to‑290‑ohm unit and have the PCM updated.

Diagnosis
Use a generic scan tool to retrieve the PCM broadcast code. Compare it to the following list:
PCM Broadcast Codes (20‑to‑120‑ohm sending units):
BZCD, BZCF
CKLB, CKLC
CMTK, CMTL, CMTM
CSWP, CSWR
CXKF, CXWP
If the code is not listed, the PCM has already been updated. Diagnose other causes using the SLX service manual and ETM.
If the code is listed, proceed to the repair procedure.
Repair Procedure
1. Write down the client’s radio presets and audio settings.
2. Note the fuel gauge reading, then disconnect the negative battery cable.
3. Remove the fuel fill cap.
4. If the tank is more than 1/2 full, drain or siphon fuel into a suitable container. Tighten the drain plug to 20 N·m (14 lb‑ft).
5. Raise the vehicle on a lift.
6. Clean the area around the fuel sending unit using brake cleaner and compressed air.
7. Remove the sending unit. Cover the tank opening to prevent contamination. Discard the old unit.
8. Install the new sending unit.
9. Lower the vehicle.
10. Refill the tank with the drained fuel and reinstall the fuel fill cap.
11. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
12. Re-enter radio presets and reset the clock.
13. Send the PCM to the vendor for reprogramming. Instructions are available on the iN under: Service Bay → Smart Cable.
14. Clear any remaining DTCs using a generic scan tool.
