3.2TL Warranty Extension: EGR Port Clogging

Supersedes 00‑004, dated October 26, 2001

Background

In some regions of the U.S., certain chemical properties of gasoline may cause the intake manifold EGR port to clog or the EGR valve to fail. When this occurs, the MIL may illuminate with DTC P0401 (insufficient EGR flow) or P1491 (insufficient EGR lift).

Warranty Extension Information

This warranty extension cancels the previous PCV hose routing Product Update Campaign. Do not install the PCV hose routing kit anymore.

American Honda is extending warranty coverage for EGR system issues to 8 years or 80,000 miles, whichever comes first. To qualify, the MIL must be on with one of the listed DTCs. Install the EGR pipe kit and file a claim per this bulletin.

Customer Notification

Owners of early‑production 1999 TLs (first ~25,000 VINs) will receive letters explaining the cancellation of the PUD and the new warranty extension. Remaining 1999 TL owners will receive similar letters. Examples of these letters appear at the end of this bulletin.

Corrective Action

Clean the EGR port and install the EGR pipe kit.

Parts Information

EGR Pipe Kit: P/N 06175‑P8E‑A00

Tool Information

EGR Pipe Installation Kit: T/N 07ZAD‑P8AA000

Acura Debuting 3 Vehicles at Detroit

Acura will unveil three all-new vehicles at the 2012 North American International Auto Show including an all-new compact ILX sports sedan, a redesigned RDX crossover sport utility vehicle, and a concept version of the next generation Acura NSX super car.

The Acura ILX Concept is a styling study of an all-new luxury compact sedan scheduled for launch in spring 2012. To be positioned at the gateway to the Acura lineup, the ILX will feature three powertrains including Acura's first-ever gas-electric hybrid. Acura also will unveil a prototype of the 2013 RDX, the second generation of Acura's five-passenger SUV. Finally, Acura will debut the NSX Concept, which represents the styling direction for the next generation of Acura's super sports car.

Honda Manufacturing of Indiana, LLC (HMIN) today announced that it will be the exclusive manufacturer of the Acura ILX, an all-new luxury sedan going into mass production in Indiana in the spring of 2012.

The Acura ILX will join the TL sedan, ZDX crossover vehicle, and the MDX and RDX sport-utility vehicles as the fifth Acura model produced exclusively in North America. Acura finished second among all luxury brands in the J.D. Power and Associates' 2011 Initial Quality Study.

HMIN was recognized earlier this year for its outstanding quality as one of only three automobile plants globally to earn a Platinum Award for outstanding quality based on the results of J.D. Power and Associates' 2011 Initial Quality Survey℠ (IQS). The plant recently added nearly 1,000 associates to support the move to two-shift production, which started on Oct. 24, 2011, doubling the plant's capacity to 200,000 vehicles per year. The Acura ILX will be the first hybrid vehicle to be made in America at a Honda plant. Gasoline engines for the new Acura ILX will be produced at the Anna, Ohio, engine plant of Honda of America Mfg., Inc.

Honda Manufacturing Indiana, LLC (HMIN) in Greensburg, Ind., began operations with production of Civic Sedans in October 2008. HMIN added production of Honda's natural gas-powered Civic Sedan in May 2009, and began producing Civic for export to markets outside North America in September 2009. With employment of approximately 2,000 associates and capital investment exceeding $550 million, HMIN started operations as a zero-waste-to-landfill factory, meaning no waste is sent to landfills, and maintains one of the lowest environmental footprints of any automobile plant in Honda's global production network.

Some things I have been hearing:
  • Acura Legend?
    • Acura will get new flagship...
    • The new flagship will feature the electric SH-AWD with V8 performance and better than inline-4 cylinder fuel efficiency
  • Acura NSX Concept
    • Basically, the vehicle spied on the Avengers' movie set over the summer
    • More production developed version and is also in hard-top form.
    • Will carry on the NSX tradition of a mid-engine, rear-wheel drive layout.
  • Acura ILX (the following are the different powertrain setups)
    • hybrid form (1.5L IMA).
    • For automatic transmission, the ILX will be offered in a 2.0L 4-cyl flavor
    • For the more sport-minded, a 6-speed manual will be offered, with a 2.4L 4-cylinder.
  • Acura Strategy
    • "Smart Luxury"
    • Acura's model strategy will be centered around a 3-sedan lineup running in parallel with a dual-CUV offering, so because of the ILX either the TSX or TL will get axed.

The Refreshed 2012 Acura TL

The 4th generation Acura TL got a new look. I think it looks better than the refresh, but not as good as the 3rd gen Acura TL.

he 2012 TL's refined new look includes a redesigned front bumper with improved aerodynamics, a revised grille, updated headlights and turn signals, a new fog light design and a shorter front overhang. At the rear, a new rear bumper incorporates a significantly repositioned license plate opening and smaller rear reflectors, while updated taillights and a thinner rear trunk edge trim add to a sophisticated new look.

Below is a video from VTEC.net, interviewing 2012 Acura TL Lead Designer Damon Schell. Schell explains how the look of the TL was refined. Jon Ikeda (who penned the 3rd generation 2004 TL) also weighs in briefly with a few of his comments on the TL refresh

How Good Is Acura's SH-AWD?

Temple Of VTEC was fortunate enough to attend Acura's Winter Test Experience at in Baudette, MN. Acura demonstrated the sophistication of their SH-AWD and Vehicle Stability Assist systems relative to those offered by competitors. The Acuras included the MDX, ZDX, and TL SH-AWD 6MT. The competitors included the 2010 Audi Q7, 2010 BMW 335xi, 2010 BMW X6 3.5 xDrive, 2010 Infiniti FX35, and 2010 Lexus RX350.

The interesting part of the video starts around 1 minute 20 seconds in. All I can say is SH-AWD is pretty impressive!

Q&A From Winter 2010 Acura Style

Q: I will be traveling to an area where I may need to use snow chains on my 2008 TSX. What product does Acura recommend?

A: If road conditions require extra traction equipment, Acura recommends SCC Radial Chain CH2412T, a cable-type chain made by Security Chain Company. Always follow your vehicle Owner's Manual when selecting traction aids, because improperly installed or incorrectly sized traction devices can damage your vehicle's break lines, suspension, body and wheels.

Q: I'm having difficulty dialing numbers that aren't in my phone book. Can you give me a few tips on operating the Bluetooth feature on my 2007 MDX with navigation system?

A: To dial a number not stored in your Bluetooth HandsFreeLink(R) phone book, press and release the "Talk" button, wait for the beep and in a clear, natural speaking voice say, "Dial," and state the phone number. Be sure to close the windows and moonroof first, to minimize background noise.

Your 2007 MDX also has a help feature where you can review a list of voice commands: just press "Talk," wait for the beep, then say, "HandsFreeLink help." Your command can be repeated to you.

For more info and a cell phone compatibility chart, visit www.acura.com/handsfreelink.

Q: I would like to change the automatic door lock and unlock settings on my 2009 TL. Where can I find out how to do this?

A: You can find this information in a few places. The fastest and easiest is the Quick Start Guide, under Personalized Settings. Another great source is the Door Lock Settings video at myacura.com. And of course, the vehicle Owner's Manual has everything you need to know about your car.

Essentially, your TL has two memory settings. The personalized settings include door locks, seat and outside mirror positions, climate control and radio settings. Save your preferences immediately by pressing the "Memo" button on the driver's door and the number that matches your key fob -- either 1 or 2.

Fix-It Tips for a Faded or Blotchy Dashboard

Currently Applies To: ’04–08 TL

Got a vehicle with a faded or blotchy dashboard? The likely cause is the compatibilizer material in the dashboard migrating through the cover. After the material ages, proper cleaning and an application of a non-silicone-based protectant should bring it back to showroom condition. Keep in mind, though, if you clean the dashboard before all that material has migrated, you may need to do it again and reapply the non-silicone-based protectant.

To clean the dashboard, first moisten a clean shop towel with Acura Leather & Vinyl Cleaner (P/N 08700-9214A), then vigorously rub the surface until the discoloration goes away. For best results, clean the dashboard twice, wiping in different directions.

To protect the dashboard, moisten another clean shop towel with a non-silicone-based protectant and generously apply it to the surface. Do this twice, wiping in different directions to make sure you’ve covered all areas. After some extensive testing of current protectants
available in the market, Acura recommends 303 Aerospace Protectant from 303 Products, Inc. When it comes to Acura dashboards, Acura has found this product offers even better protection than what was offered before with Acura Leather & Vinyl Protectant (P/N 08700-9209A).

I actually do own and use a bottle of 303 Aerospace Protectant, it was recommended on Acurazine.com. Aerospace Protectant also leaves the dash shiny! ;)

Properly Set ATF Dipstick to Avoid Starter Motor Failure

Currently Applies To: ’03 and later MDX and ’04 and later TL

Did you know that if you don’t properly set the ATF dipstick, you can wind up with a starter motor failure? Sounds a bit far-fetched, but it’s true! The reason is the ATF dipstick’s location; it’s next to the starter motor.

If you don’t properly set the dipstick in its tube, ATF can spill out and soak the starter motor. That fluid will eventually work its way into the motor components, causing this sort of damage:

So, whenever you need to remove the ATF dipstick, always make sure you properly reset it by pushing it all the way back into the tube. If you don’t, you could wind up with a failed starter motor.

2002-2003 Acura TL Recall

An existing safety recall of the driver's airbag in certain 2001 Honda Accords and Civics due to a potential defect in the airbag's inflation system is being expanded to include more vehicles, American Honda Motor Co., Inc., announced today. Originally initiated in November 2008, approximately 440,000 additional vehicles are included in the expanded recall, which will require the replacement of the driver's steering-wheel-mounted airbag inflator.
In some vehicles, airbag inflators can produce over-pressurization of the driver's (front) airbag inflator mechanism during airbag deployment. If an affected inflator deploys, the increased internal pressure may cause the inflator casing to rupture. Metal fragments could pass through the cloth airbag cushion material, possibly causing an injury or fatality to vehicle occupants.
Registered owners of vehicles that potentially contain affected inflators will receive a recall notice in the mail over the next few months, with the owners of vehicles most likely to include a problem airbag being contacted first. The recall notice will include further instructions to help schedule a repair to each vehicle. Interested owners may confirm their vehicle's recall status by visiting the Honda "Owner Link" website at www.owners.honda.com/recalls or the Acura "My Acura" website at www.owners.acura.com/recalls. Only certain vehicles are affected, and concerned owners of 2001-2002 Accords, 2001 Civics and 2002-2003 Acura TLs are encouraged to wait to receive a recall notice in the mail before scheduling an appointment with their local dealer.
For more information and downloadable high-resolution images of Honda and Acura vehicles, please visit www.hondanews.com and www.acuranews.com. Consumers can verify their vehicle's recall status by visiting www.owners.honda.com/recalls for Honda vehicles and www.owners.acura.com/recalls for Acura vehicles.

Happenings in the Acura World

1) The long rumored but never implemented V8 may be a possibility. Honda's CEO admits that Acura will not be able to compete with other premium brands with only the Acura RL's 3.7 liter V6.

2) Acura is looking to expand it's lineup and is currently testing new sport crossover vehicle. The vehicle is supposed to rival Infiniti’s FX and BMW’s X6.

3) Acura dealers are painting the grill on the new 2009 Acura TL. This is a bad sign for Acura as they're trying to solidify the Acura brand. Dealers taking matters into their own hands could ruin what Acura is trying to build up in the long run. Plus, what is this going to tell the public?

6-Speed Manual for 2010 Acura TL

The availability of a 6-speed manual transmission for the 2010 TL SH-AWD® represents the first time Acura has ever paired its acclaimed Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ system with a manual gearbox. In addition, the new close-ratio 6-speed manual transmission is approximately 110 lbs lighter than the Sequential SportShift automatic transmission to further benefit acceleration, braking and cornering.

The 6-speed manual transmission is an all-new design that is substantially stronger than the previous generation TL manual transmission. In addition to using a more rigid aluminum case and heavier-duty internals, the new manual transmission employs precisely selected gear ratios based on the characteristics of the TL's new 3.7L V-6 engine and SH-AWD® drivetrain. New gear synchronizers deliver improved shift accuracy and feel, and a short-throw shifter assembly generates confident shifting combined with low shift effort.

Acura engineers also designed an entirely new clutch system for the new 6-speed manual transmission to withstand the TL's robust power output while also improving modulation for noticeably easier use. The new self-adjusting, dual-mass clutch delivers extremely constant pedal effort throughout the entire stroke of the pedal. By keeping the effort linear, the driver has improved feel that results in better clutch interaction.

The TL SH-AWD® 6MT has a specially calibrated Hill Start Assist system that helps prevent the vehicle from rolling backwards when the driver switches from the brake to the accelerator while stopped on a hill. When the road incline exceeds an 8-degree threshold and the vehicle is fully stopped, Hill Start Assist automatically activates. When Hill Start Assist is active, the brakes automatically hold for one second as the driver's foot transitions from the brake to the accelerator pedal. The brakes are automatically released when the vehicle begins to move forward.

The addition of a manual transmission, an all-new clutch system and suspension changes yield an 88 lb. reduction in overall vehicle weight. The weight reduction not only delivers improved performance, but also generates a more favorable front/rear weight bias. Compared to an automatic transmission equipped TL SH-AWD®, the 6-speed manual version improves weight distribution by 1-percent thus generating a 58/42 ratio versus the 5AT's 59/41 ratio.

Acura's Largest Media Campaign To Date

The effort, via RPA, Santa Monica, Calif., includes a series of five 30-second TV spots that elaborate the idea that the TL is the most powerful Acura ever built. With their focus on metaphors of power and strength and design, the art-house ads diverge from previous Acura ads that were rich in computer graphics and focused on in-car technology.

The effort--comprised of five TV spots, with three starting now and two later--elaborates the power theme with creative that shows slow-motion video of an object impacting and crashing through a barrier, then emerging as the TL. One shows a bullet entering a bottle and smashing through the back of it with voiceover saying: "Precision is power"; another shows a fist smashing through a board with a "Strength is power" message. And one shows a diver leaping from a board and entering the water, and proclaims: "Grace is power."

An agency representative says the brand did not have to hammer the high-mpg message because consumers associate the brand with high fuel economy. "At the same time, the Acura target audience is buying vehicles for different reasons. The theme of 'Power' communicated throughout the campaign doesn't just refer to horsepower," she says.
