Force21, a member of the TOV forums, photoshopped the front of the newly redesigned 2009 Acura RL. Force21 moved the hood line to match the headlights. I think it looks a lot better compared to the original. I have no idea why Acura/Honda didn't make it like this in the first place. The top is the photoshopped photo, and the untouched version is on the bottom.

Redesigned 2009 Acura RL Debuts

The redesigned 2009 Acura RL luxury sedan made its world debut today at the Chicago Auto Show. Featuring bold, sleek exterior styling, an upgraded interior, advanced technologies and powerful new engine, the RL once again pushes the limits of performance, style, and luxury. The 2009 RL will go on-sale this spring at Acura dealerships nationwide.

The 2009 RL furthers cutting edge technology with the addition of new high-tech items including AcuraLink® weather, AcuraLink® Traffic Rerouting™, a new Note function for XM® Radio, Active Sound Control, and Bluetooth® Audio to an already robust list of features found on the previous RL. To enhance handling, new chassis technology abounds in the drivetrain in the form of improved Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™, a revised steering system, upgraded coil springs, better performing shock absorbers, larger rear stabilizer bar, and more aggressive wheels and tires. Performance improves with the RL thanks to a new, larger 3.7-liter V-6 that incorporates the first ever SOHC use of VTEC® valvetrain actuation for both the intake and exhaust valves.

"RL represents the very best we have to offer in terms of engineering, technology, performance, luxury and safety", said Dick Colliver, executive vice president, sales. For 2009, the RL will be offered in three different trim levels including RL, RL with Technology Package and RL with Technology Package Plus CMBS™. The top RL package is the Technology Package with CMBS™ which also includes Acura's acclaimed Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), and genuine wood instrument panel trim.

Powertrain
The innovation built into the new RL begins with the most powerful engine ever offered in an Acura sedan. An all-new 3.7-liter V-6 engine develops 300 horsepower and 271 lb-ft of torque thanks to an innovative new VTEC™ valvetrain system for both the intake and exhaust valves, a higher compression ratio, along with a special dual-stage magnesium intake manifold that enables the intake to function as a single- or dual-plenum manifold design based on engine operating parameters. In addition to developing improved power and torque, the RL engine meets tough CARB ULEV-2 emission standards and delivers good fuel economy. The RL's engine bay appears more upscale thanks to a new surround panel assembly that reduces visual distractions and focuses attention directly on the all-new 3.7-liter V-6 engine.



To handle the higher power of the 3.7-liter engine, a new version of the Sequential SportShift 5-speed automatic transmission is fitted to the 2009 RL. Featuring new "smart" F1®-style steering wheel mounted paddle shifters and a new straight-gate
console mounted gear selector, the RL driver now has more gear control than ever before.

The RL's acclaimed Super Handling All-Wheel Drive™ (SH-AWD™) system returns for 2009, but is now quicker responding and better performing.

There are numerous traction advantages of all-wheel drive, yet SH-AWD™ does a key function that is not available with traditional AWD systems-- SH-AWD™ utilizes torque vectoring to increase the rotation speed of an outside rear wheel during aggressive cornering to help the car turn more effectively while under power. This "yaw" function reduces the cornering load on the front tires to minimize understeer, to improve handling balance, and to escalate total cornering grip.

Body and Chassis
To further enhance handling and ride comfort, the new RL retains a fully independent suspension system with front double-wishbone and rear multi-link architecture. For 2009 the RL features higher rate coil springs, larger diameter stabilizer bars, stiffer subframe mount bushings and improved design steering rack components. To further improve handling and looks, new 18-inch diameter 7-spoke aluminum wheels are matched with more aggressive tires (replacing the previous 17-inch wheel/tire offering).

Exterior/Interior
The 2009 RL's new exterior styling is not only more aggressive, but delivers excellent aerodynamics and reduced rear lift at higher speeds. The RL's more athletic style foreshadows the power concealed by the new power plenum front grille and blow-formed aluminum hood. The RL's shape is taut and athletic, and its acceleration and cornering performance allow it to challenge the most capable German and Japanese sports sedans. Comfort, quietness and ride quality are also on a par with performance sedan competitors. For 2009, eight exterior colors are available--5 of which are new--including a new pearl pigment process that improves luster and shine.















Inside, the 2009 RL features a more elegantly styled interior that includes more room for rear seat passengers, easier-to-use front seat belts, door-mounted pull pockets, softer arm rests, redesigned vents, larger/clearer lettering for HVAC controls, and easier actuation of climate control functions. A revised steering wheel with available genuine wood trim (included with the CMBS package) and metal-look accents is now fitted to the RL along with a matching wood-trimmed transmission shift knob. Complementing the steering wheel are upgraded gauges that incorporate brushed metal accents for enhanced appearance. For 2009, additional insulation, a more high-tech design of Acura's acoustic glass windshield, and a new Active Sound Control (ASC) noise abatement system team to further reduce the RL's already quiet cabin.









The RL's perforated leather front seats now incorporate six levels of heated/cooled ventilation. Moreover, just like the driver's seat, the passenger front seat now has 10-way power adjustability. For 2009, the center panel controls are now more intuitive and are surrounded by a new background color along with improved quality wood patterned panels. These interior upgrades are complimented by advanced electronics that include a satellite-linked Acura Navigation System with Voice Activation™ along with the innovative AcuraLink® satellite communication system with Real-time traffic, AcuraLink® Traffic Rerouting™ and (new for 2009) AcuraLink® weather. The RL is the first vehicle on the market to feature in-dash integrated, continually updated real-time weather information in a single-screen format. The spectacular Acura/Bose® 10-speaker Sound System with DVD-Audio returns but is now upgraded to include Bluetooth® Audio, even richer audio sound, a new Note function for XM® Radio, improved button legibility, and a USB connectivity port.

Safety
The 2009 RL retains Acura's extremely rigid Advanced Compatibility Engineering™ (ACE™) body structure that features extensive use of high-tensile steel and lightweight aluminum components to take vehicle construction beyond conventional safety protocols while keeping overall vehicle weight in check. The ACE™ structure's front-mounted polygonal main frame is designed to help prevent cabin deformation by distributing frontal impact forces through multiple load bearing pathways--and away from the passenger compartment. For 2009, to enhance safety a new Active Head Restraint System is built into the front seats to help improve neck and head protection in the event in a rear impact collision. To further aid in safety, the RL includes as standard a passenger seatbelt reminder, Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) and six airbags. These advances team to make the 2009 RL the strongest, most powerful, best handling, safest and most luxurious sedan Acura has ever built.

The RL earned 5-star ratings (the best possible) for frontal and side crash tests, and for rollover resistance, from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The RL is the fourth vehicle in the history of the program to earn the top rating of "5-star" in all three test categories. Government star ratings are part of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's (NHTSA) New Car Assessment Program (www.safercar.gov). In addition, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awarded the RL its top rating of GOOD in Side Impact Collision Evaluation (SICE) along with a GOOD rating for IIHS' frontal offset crash test. With a new Active Head Restraint System for front seat passengers, the 2009 RL is anticipated to receive a GOOD rating in IIHS rear crash protection evaluation.

2009 Acura TSX Spyshots?

Temple of VTEC has the following pictures up labeling them possible spyshots of the 2009 Acura TSX.






Supposedly, these pictures were sent in by TOV reader 'Tyson,' who works near Honda headquarters. The car in this photo looks very similar to the one caught last October.

[UPDATE] Car Note

I was walking to my car today after work and I saw a piece of paper above my driver side car handle. My initial reaction was, "Crap! We're getting car fliers at work now?" I hated this crap when I was in college. When I got closer, I saw that it was more like a Post-It, then I thought... "Oh no, don't tell me someone dinged my car." I pulled the sticky off the window and read it:

"I have a question about your TSX.

(NO - I didn't hit it)"

The note was on a "sister" company Post-It, so I believe he works for my company too. I gave him a call back and left a voice message that I was the TSX owner and was responding to his note. I had to call and leave a second message because I forgot to leave my number the first time. I hope it's not something stupid, like he is trying to sell me something. I'll keep you guys updated. Anyone want to guess what's this all about?

[UPDATE]

The guy who left a note on my car, Mike, contacted me today. Turns out that he also has an Acura TSX. He explained that his manual 2006 model recently got into a head on collision and that he wanted to compared the engine bay of an undamaged TSX. He was concerned about the repairs done on his car.

I popped the hood to my 2005 TSX in the parking lot at work so he could check it out. He stated that a couple of the wiring near the radiator was zip-tied on his car and that it didn't look right. I told him to take a picture of my car and show it to the people who worked on his car. He agreed, however he didn't bring a good quality camera and only had his phone. I told him if he needed that I'll pop my hood again on another day.

Then we just talked. I asked him if he was an Acurazine.com member and he said he was. I told him I'm on that site like every other day. He also said how he wanted to install a cold air intake (CAI) and I told him I wanted to do the same, but just never got around to it. I also commented about how I have been wanting to get a the service manual for my car, but it's like $75 + shipping + tax. We both agreed that we should have paid a little extra for the navigation. He said, "Thanks!" then we shook hands and parted ways. About 10 minutes later he emailed a link to photos of his car wreck.

Yikes! I would never want to see my car like this.

2009 Acura TSX, RL, and TL Rumors

TSX:
- Onsale date has been "confirmed" to be as soon as April 24, 2008.
- Initially, only front wheel drive (possible SH-AWD in future?).


The 2009 Acura TSX will offer 8 exterior colors and 3 leather trims.

RL:
- The 2009 Acura RL will be the world's first production model with the XM weather function (fact).
- Will be getting cooled front seats (which were always offered in Canada).
- Engine still will be 3.5L, but now will output 306hp.- New edgier look.

TL:
- Supposedly, getting a 3.5L for the front wheel drive version and a 3.7L engine for the SH-AWD version.

Refreshed 2009 Acura RL Coming to Chicago Auto Show

Acura redesigned the RL in 2005, a new refreshed version will be unveiled next week at the Chicago Auto Show. Sales will begin on April 24th, same time with the 2009 Acura TSX. The 2009 RL will be offered in three different packages: Standard Package, Technology Package and CMBS Package. The new Acura TL is supposed to make it's appearance on dealer floors in March.

The Next Acura TSX?

Yesterday, Honda released the following:

23 January, 2008 - Honda has released first glimpses of the new Accord which debuts at the 2008 Geneva Motor Show.

The new Accord boasts quality features to challenge established premium contenders in the executive D-segment. Sporty styling and enticing driving dynamics are offered while strong environmental credentials impress in an all Euro 5 emissions-compliant engine line up.

The refined interior is designed with carefully selected materials to create an outstanding standard of fit and finish. To complement the exceptional level of traveling comfort the interior is characterized by a strong feeling of personal space for both the driver and passengers.

Technical details are still under wraps but the new Accord has a unique package of passive and active safety features to deliver even greater confidence.

The new Accord and Accord Tourer models will be unveiled on Honda's stand at 08:30 on 4 March, 2008, at the Geneva Motor Show.

Sales of the models will commence in early summer.

More information will follow on 11 February, 2008.

If these European Honda Accord Tourer pictures are glimpses of the next generation Acura TSX, then I'm a little disappointed. Although, it doesn't look bad, it looks too similar to the current TSX. I mean come on, look at what Honda was able to do with the style differences from the previous generation American (USDM) Honda Accord to the new 2008 Honda Accord, now that is a new model change! From these "new TSX" images, the car just looks like a refreshed current generation TSX, which already got an update for the 2006 model. I was really hoping Honda would slap an Acura symbol on the Honda Sports 4 and sell that as the next Acura TSX. Maybe that's what they're really going to do and they're just toying with us with these pictures. For Acura to advance as a tier 1 luxury brand, Honda needs to step it up with the next generation Acura vehicles, be more aggressive and stop re-badging Hondas.

Acura Changes Direction for RL

A lot of car sites have been talking about how the Acura TSX will be the first in the brand to see the new 4 cylinder diesel engine, and how there will be a V6 version most likely for the TL and MDX. Well... isn't news like this just obvious after Honda stated that i-DTEC was coming to Acura? The European has had a diesel Honda Accord, which is the Acura TSX to us Americans, for awhile now. And we pretty much know the TSX will not be getting a V6 option, so I won't waste anymore time on this right now.

The news I found interesting was Acura's goal of becoming a tier 1 automaker in 4-6 years, truly competing with the likes of BMW and Mercedes. One of Acura's weaknesses right now is the current generation RL. The RL is Acura's "flagship" sedan, however it has trouble matching up against other luxury brands, most likely due to the lack of V8 and rear-wheel drive options.


Acura RL

Dick Colliver, executive vice president of American Honda Motor, acknowledged that the Acura RL was the "wrong car" for the segment. A new RL is slated for 2010, and that the car's overall direction will change. Hopefully, this will address the weak sales of Acura's range-topping RL sedan.

Diesel for Acura in 2009

Honda's premium Acura brand will be the first to get the new 4 cylinder i-DTEC engine in 2009. Models fueled by V6 diesel engines will follow after 2010. Honda's CEO, Takeo Fukui, said Honda's clean diesel cars will not require a urea tank as most European systems do. Honda's new diesel drive train generates and stores ammonia within a two-layer catalytic converter to turn nitrogen oxide into harmless nitrogen.

The use of aluminum in the cylinder block instead of steel would also allow it to manufacture the engines using its existing gasoline engine facilities, keeping initial investments down. Mr. Fukui expects Honda's sale of four-cylinder diesel cars to reach about 150,000 vehicles globally by around 2010 with the planned roll-out in the United States and Japan.


i-DTEC: A combination of optimized combustion chamber design and reduced injection time results in a clean, quiet engine that delivers excellent performance for an enjoyable driving experience. In addition, the i-DTEC engine meets the ultra-stringent U.S. EPA Tier II Bin 5 emission standards without the on-board storage of urea.
