[A Look into the Past] Acura SLX: The SUV that couldn't...

From 1996 to 1999, Acura sold slightly upgraded Isuzu Troopers as a full-size SUV known as the SLX. Consumer Reports gave the Acura SLX a "NOT ACCEPTABLE" rating due to the "tendency to roll over during testing." This could be noted as one of the causes of why the SLX sold so poorly. The SLX started out with a 3.2 liter V6 (max hp = 190 hp) engine, which was later replaced with a 3.5 liter DOHC V6 (215 hp) in 1998. In 2001, the Acura SLX was replaced by the Acura MDX.

Acura should be and probably is embarrassed by this car. So why would Acura disguised an Isuzu Trooper as an Acura? The answer is because back then Acura didn't have the factory capacity to manufacture their own SUV. So they subcontracted to keep up with the competition.
